When is the best time to plant roses?

Cuttings are one of the main ways to propagate roses. In theory, cuttings can be taken all year round . However, being able to take cuttings does not mean that the survival rate is the highest. Here I would like to share my experience in taking cuttings, hoping that it will be helpful to you.

The choice of season for cuttings is quite important. Choosing the right season can achieve twice the result with twice the effort.

First of all, spring is a good time for cuttings , because the temperature starts to rise in spring, everything starts to recover, and roses also enter a season of rapid growth. At this time, the survival rate of rose cuttings is relatively high. But there is a problem, that is, the shortage of branches.

Generally, we prune the branches in winter. In spring, there are only new branches that have just grown, and there are not so many branches at once . If you have branches for cuttings, spring cuttings are a good choice.

The season in the year when it is most difficult to make cuttings survive is probably summer . Many netizens complained to me that they had made cuttings dozens of times in the summer and none of them survived, which traumatized them.

Why does this happen? Because the temperature is high in summer, cuttings are easily infected with black stems, and the survival rate is very low. I took cuttings of 20 Longsha Baobao this summer, but only 5 of them survived. It was a waste of materials.

So, I will definitely not bother with it tomorrow summer, and would rather wait until autumn to do the cuttings.

The survival rate of cuttings in autumn is very high . I have been reminding flower lovers that if you have not done cuttings yet, do some cuttings as soon as possible while the survival rate is high.

After a year of growth, the rose has enough branches, so those roses that grow in a more chaotic manner can be pruned.

The pruned branches are just right for cuttings. Another advantage of cutting roses in autumn is that if you cut them now, they will survive in more than a month.

After it grows a bit after being transplanted, in the spring of next year, as soon as the weather gets warmer, it will immediately sprout a large number of branches and then begin to bloom.

Winter is also a good time to take rose cuttings because the weather is relatively cold and the rose branches are not easily dehydrated, so there is no need to worry about them being dried out by the sun.

Just plant it there and keep the soil moist. If it doesn't take root in winter, it will grow roots in spring. As long as the stem doesn't dry out, it's fine. Just wait patiently and it won't be a hassle.

There are also disadvantages to rose cuttings in winter, which is that the rose branches are in a dormant period and the rooting speed is slightly slower.

It is actually very simple to propagate rose cuttings. Not only do you need to master the season, but you also need to choose the right cuttings and potting soil, as well as the subsequent maintenance. As long as these are mastered, rose cuttings are easy to survive. After the rose cuttings survive, how to prepare the potting soil? The best way is to add coconut bran, perlite and humus soil, or you can add some coal slag, peat or sheep manure, or slow-release fertilizer. Don't put too much of these nutrients, you can put a small amount multiple times.

The roses are growing very well, and the root system is also growing very well. It is best to use a root control pot, which is conducive to root growth . It is okay to use peat to plant roses, but it is best not to use pure peat. You can mix it with other substrates to prevent root burn .
