How to plant newly bought rose seedlings (how to plant newly bought potted roses online)

What kind of environmental conditions does the rose like?

1) Temperature requirements

Rose likes a warm, humid and well-lit growing environment. When there is insufficient light, its branches and leaves are thin and weak, and it blooms few or even no flowers. In the summer, it should be properly shaded under the scorching sun.

The optimum temperature for the growth of roses is 20-28°C during the day and 16-22°C at night. If the night temperature is lower than 6°C, the growth will be seriously affected. When the temperature is below 5°C or above 35°C, roses generally enter a dormant state and stop growing.

2) Soil requirements

Roses prefer slightly acidic sandy loam that is rich in organic matter, loose, breathable, and has smooth drainage. The growing environment should be well ventilated and free from pollution by harmful gases such as smoke, sulfur dioxide, chlorine, and fluoride.

If the breeding environment is poorly ventilated, roses are very likely to be infected with diseases and pests such as powdery mildew and red spider mites, causing the roses to grow poorly and fail to form buds and bloom.

What are the basic requirements for planting newly bought roses?

As long as the soil in the pot is not frozen, the rose soil is not loose, and the dryness and humidity are moderate, potted roses can be planted at any time and watered normally until the rose survives.

The width of the planting hole should be sufficient to allow the roots to stretch without being restricted by the soil pit, and the depth should be sufficient to ensure that the grafting site is about 2.5 cm below the soil surface.

Apply half a bucket of fully decomposed organic fertilizer and a handful of bone meal or slow-release fertilizer into the planting hole, then put the rose plant in with the soil, backfill the soil, and lightly compact the potting soil.

Flower lovers should be reminded that if the rose is in its growing season, any open flowers should be removed; if it is in its dormant season, the stems should be pruned to promote sprouting and vigorous growth in early spring.

How to plant newly bought bare-root roses

Step 1: Pruning and soaking of bare-root rose seedlings

Due to factors such as sea transportation, the tips of some bare-root seedlings' branches or roots may turn slightly black, and they need to be pruned !

Some bare-root roses will have some jelly-like moisturizers added before shipment, but there will be a certain amount of water loss due to long-term transportation, so they need to be soaked in water before planting.

After pruning, soak the bare-root seedlings in a solution of carbendazim for 5-10 minutes, and then soak them in clean water for 30-60 minutes (if you are worried that the bare roots will not absorb enough water, you can soak them overnight before planting).

Step 2: Digging the Planting Hole and Amending the Soil

Choose a higher location, clear the weeds and stones in the soil, and then dig a planting hole. Usually the hole is about 40 cm wide and 60 cm deep. It depends on the size of the root system, making sure the roots can fit in with a relatively stretched posture.

Use an iron fork to break up the mud at the bottom of the planting pit, add the improved medium and mix well. This will help improve the soil environment and facilitate the growth of new roots downwards.

Step 3: Place bare-root seedlings and measure planting depth

Place the bare root in the center of the planting hole, allowing the root system to stretch and lie flat. If you are unsure, place a bamboo pole horizontally on top of the planting hole to gauge whether the planting depth is appropriate.

In short, when planting newly bought roses, you should follow the growth habits of roses, keep the potting soil moist, the ambient temperature suitable, and the light sufficient. Choose slightly acidic sandy loam that is rich in organic matter, loose and breathable, and has good drainage . The breeding environment requires good ventilation and no smoke and dust pollution .
