Cocoa fruit is native to the upper reaches of the Amazon River in South America . It is now widely cultivated in tropical regions. The main producing countries are Ghana, Brazil, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Dominican Republic and Malaysia . It is also planted in Hainan and southern Yunnan in China , where it grows well.
