Begonia cutting method diagram, which month is suitable for cutting

Begonia is a perennial herbaceous shrub from Brazil. There are many varieties, including double and single petals, with red, white and pink colors. It has a strong reproductive ability and can be propagated by branch or leaf cuttings, and soil or water can be used as the cultivation medium.

Cutting time

The best time for begonia cuttings is in spring and autumn, and they can also survive in winter . The suitable temperature for begonia growth is 15 to 24℃. In the southern region, April to May is warm and humid, which is most suitable for cuttings. When the temperature is around 20℃, the cuttings are easier to take root and survive.

Cutting steps

Prepare cuttings: Choose strong two-year-old branches with 2 buds and 3 or 4 stem nodes as cuttings. Use a sterilized sharp blade to cut about 10 cm long branches as cuttings at an angle 1 cm below the last node of the branch.

Processing of cuttings: Cut off the tender buds on the top of the cuttings. If the cuttings have flower buds, cut off the flower buds and remove the excess leaves. You can keep 3 or 4 leaves. Place them in a cool place to dry for 2 days and then wait until the cut turns slightly white before you can start cuttings.

Prepare the soil: Begonia likes soil with good drainage and air permeability. You can choose clean fine river sand or loose sandy soil as the cultivation medium. The soil cultivation medium is best disinfected and sterilized. It is not suitable to use nutrient soil and leaf mold for cuttings. The cuttings are not easy to take root and are more likely to rot.

Cutting method: Use a wooden stick to poke a few holes in the soil, the depth of which is one-third of the length of the cuttings. When cutting, place the cuttings in the holes, slightly press the surface soil around the root base, and then place them in a weak light environment without direct sunlight to slow down the growth.

Maintenance

Do not water the begonia immediately after cuttings so that the incision can heal. Water it thoroughly once after 3 to 5 days, and do not water it again thereafter. Keep the soil slightly moist. After about 10 days, the plant will grow 3 to 4 cm roots. Move it to a place with direct sunlight, and it can be potted after another 6 to 7 days.
