How to change the soil of Bougainvillea? Seasons for changing the soil and matters needing attention

It is best to change the soil of Bougainvillea in spring and autumn, but for experienced flower growers, it can be done all year round. After the soil is changed, timely watering and top dressing can promote the rapid recovery of Bougainvillea.

Changing the soil for Bougainvillea is often done in spring and autumn, specifically from February to April or from September to October. The temperature is stable and relatively warm during these two periods. Changing the soil is conducive to the rapid resumption of growth of Bougainvillea and can increase its survival rate.

Bougainvillea soil replacement method

1. Prepare the soil

If you change the soil for Bougainvillea, you need to prepare loose and fertile soil with certain air permeability and drainage. Mix river sand, leaf mold and perlite in a ratio of 4:4:2 to speed up its recovery and growth.

2. Prune the roots

Stop watering the bougainvillea for 2-3 days before changing the soil. It is relatively drought-resistant and will not die if it is not watered for 2-3 days. When the soil is dry, use a bamboo stick to loosen the soil around the pot, separate the bougainvillea from the pot, remove 1/2 of the old soil, and do not let the soil around the roots loosen. Ensure that the root ball is not scattered so that it can survive easily.

3. Put it in the basin

Choose a larger flowerpot, put rubble at the bottom of the pot, then cover it with a layer of potting soil, place the treated bougainvillea plant in the pot, and continue to fill it with potting soil. The soil should not be buried too deep to avoid lack of oxygen.

Notes on changing soil for bougainvillea

After changing the soil of Bougainvillea, water it in time to keep the soil moist, but avoid water accumulation. Then place it in semi-shaded place to slow down the growth of seedlings. It is not suitable to be exposed to the sun. The growth period is generally 10-30 days. After that, it can be maintained normally and light fertilizer and water should be applied appropriately.
