Ginkgo tree cutting time and method

Ginkgo tree cutting time

There are two main types of cutting propagation for Ginkgo trees, including old branch cuttings and tender branch cuttings. Old branch cuttings are suitable for large-scale growers, and the cutting time should be from March to April. Tender branch cuttings are suitable for general families and small units, and are carried out from late May to mid-June.

Ginkgo tree cutting method

1. Cutting method of old branches

Select 1-2 year old strong, disease-free branches from adult ginkgo trees and cut them into 15 cm to 20 cm cuttings. The top of the cuttings should be round and the bottom can be cut obliquely into the shape of a horse ear to increase the water absorption area.

After cutting the cuttings, wash them with clean water, then soak them in 100 ml of ABT rooting powder water for 1 hour. After drying them slightly, insert the cuttings into a loose seedbed, cover them with a layer of soil, and water them. They will take root after about 40 days.

2. Cuttings of tender branches

Ginkgo trees can also be propagated by cuttings of soft branches. Choose branches that have not yet become lignified around the roots as cuttings. The length should be about 2 cm, and 2-4 leaves should be retained on them. After the cuttings are prepared, insert them into a loose, fertile, well-drained substrate. After the incision heals, transplant them into the soil of the seedbed.

Ginkgo tree cutting maintenance

After the ginkgo tree is cut, it should be placed in a place with good diffuse light or bright light to avoid exposure to strong light. Water it every 3 days to keep the substrate slightly moist, but there should be no accumulation of water, otherwise the roots will rot and the survival rate will be affected.
