When and how to repot bougainvillea

Bougainvillea repotting time

It is recommended to repot bougainvillea in spring or early autumn every year, because the ambient temperature is suitable and the light is sufficient during these two time periods. Repotting at this time can greatly reduce root damage and ensure a high survival rate.

Methods and steps for repotting bougainvillea

1. Remove the plant from the pot : When removing the plant from the pot, first use a small shovel to draw a circle along the inner wall of the pot, or tap the outer wall of the pot gently, both of which can make the potting soil easier to separate. Then turn the pot upside down, hold the rhizome, and carefully take it out.

2. Prune the roots : first dig out the bougainvillea, shake off the soil around the roots, then use clean water to clean the roots of the plant, then cut off the dead and rotten roots, then use diluted carbendazim to disinfect and sterilize, and finally dry the roots.

3. Prepare the potting soil : Prepare a larger flower pot with good air permeability. Soak the flower pot in water for more than ten minutes. Choose new soil that is loose and well-drained. You can use leaf mold and garden soil. After mixing, disinfect it before use.

4. Plant in a pot : Apply organic fertilizer in the new pot, then place the bougainvillea in the middle of the prepared soil. Fill the pot with soil after the roots are expanded, compact the soil lightly, spray some water on the soil and its leaves, and finally place it in a cool place.

Maintenance of bougainvillea after repotting

After repotting the bougainvillea, it must be placed in a cool, ventilated environment, away from direct sunlight. Water it thoroughly once after potting. If you find that the soil has become dry later, water it appropriately, and do not water it unless it is dry.

After repotting the bougainvillea, do not apply fertilizer, because its root system is very weak at this time, unable to absorb fertilizer, and easily burns the roots. Wait until it starts to germinate and completely adapts to the pot, then slowly increase the light and apply fertilizer and water normally.
