How to propagate red maple: grafting, sowing and cutting propagation methods

Red maple propagation method

There are three common ways of propagating red maple, namely grafting, sowing and cutting. Most of them are carried out in May and June each year because the climate and temperature are more suitable at that time. The growth rate after planting will be faster and the survival rate will be the highest.

Common propagation methods of red maple

1. Red maple seed propagation

Although red maple can be propagated by sowing, the variation in sowing propagation is relatively large, so if it is not planted in large quantities, this method is generally not used. When sowing propagation, you need to select fuller and stronger seeds, and it should be done in clear weather.

2. Red maple cutting propagation

Red maple can also be planted by cutting propagation. This method is generally used when making small bonsai, usually in June and July each year. It is necessary to use the relatively sturdy branches of the current year as cuttings, which can be inserted into vermiculite or perlite.

3. Red maple grafting propagation

Red maple can also be propagated by grafting. 2-4 year old seedlings are needed as rootstocks. Cutting grafting is more suitable in March and April, while approach grafting is generally carried out in May and June each year. It can be cut off after the leaves fall in autumn. This method is generally used for a few rare treasures.
