How to propagate Chlorophytum comosum

How to propagate Chlorophytum comosum

Cutting propagation

Cuttings are a simple method of propagation.

The cutting propagation of Chlorophytum comosum is to cut off branches for cuttings during the growing season or when pruning branches in spring. The cutting time should avoid the high temperature in summer and the cold season in winter. After cutting, keep the soil and air moist, so that it is easy to take root.

The specific steps are: select a suitable section, leave one or two leaves, and insert it into the soil prepared in advance. The soil should be well permeable and some fine sand can be added. Do not place the planted Chlorophytum comosum under the sun. Choose a shady place and pay attention to whether to water it according to its growth conditions.

Propagation by division

The main method of propagation by division is combined with repotting.

When the thousand-leaf spider plant has grown for a long time, about 2-3 years, the plant is already very lush and can be used for division and reproduction.

The main method of propagation by division is to remove the old culture soil from the vigorously growing Chlorophytum comosum when repotting in spring, wash the roots with water, place them in a cool place to dry until the fleshy roots become soft, then find a slightly wider gap between the leaves and use a sharp scissors to cut it open, divide it into two or several clumps, and plant them in separate pots to become new plants.

It should be noted that if there are several Chlorophytum comosum plants crowded together, they can be separated by slightly pushing them apart. If it is a large tree, cut it into pieces with a knife and then plant it.

Other reproduction methods

In addition to propagation by cuttings and division, small plants on runners can also be used for propagation.

During the growing season of Chlorophytum comosum, if you find smaller plants on the runners, cut them off and plant them in culture soil or water. After the small plants grow roots, transplant them into pots.

It can also be propagated by sowing, but it is rarely used.
