How to propagate bougainvillea

The common ways of propagating bougainvillea are cuttings and layering, with cuttings being the main method. Both hard and tender branches can be used for cuttings. It is carried out from March to September, with the highest survival rate from mid-May to early June. The temperature and humidity at this time are suitable for the rooting of bougainvillea, and it can grow vigorously after propagation.

Common propagation methods of bougainvillea

1. Bougainvillea cutting propagation

The more common method of propagation of bougainvillea is cutting propagation, which has a higher survival rate. You need to prepare loose sandy soil and breathable clay pots first, and then cut off the sturdy semi-lignified branches of the bougainvillea, leaving only the top leaves for branch and leaf processing.

Insert the branches with dried wounds directly into the sandy soil at a depth of about 7 to 8 cm. Compact the surrounding soil, water thoroughly once, and then cover the flowerpot with plastic film to keep it warm and moisturize. Place it under diffuse light for maintenance, and it will take root in about 2 weeks.

2. Layering propagation of bougainvillea

Among the propagation methods and precautions of bougainvillea, layering propagation can also be chosen. The branches of the bougainvillea that are higher than the roots can be pressed into the soil. Circles can be cut out at the forked places, the outer skin can be peeled off, and then wrapped with wet mud, tied in plastic bags, and watered for maintenance.

When watering normally, you can choose to inject water through the pinholes to keep the inside of the branches moist. After about 30 days of maintenance, the branches will grow roots, and you can cut the branches and transplant them into pots for maintenance.
