How to reproduce centipede grass and the time and method of reproduction

Centipede grass reproduction method

The common methods of reproduction of centipede grass are division reproduction, spore reproduction, and tissue culture reproduction. They are usually carried out in spring and can also be carried out in autumn if the temperature is suitable. However, after the temperature drops in the later stage, warming measures need to be taken to improve the survival rate.

Common propagation methods of centipede grass

1. Propagation of centipede grass by division

Centipede grass can be propagated by division. The underground runners of centipede grass grow very fast. When repotting it in spring every year, you can dig out the centipede grass, use a knife to cut off the rhizomes on the plant, and then cultivate them separately.

2. Centipede grass spore reproduction

Centipede grass can be propagated using spores. First, sprinkle the mature spores of the plant on moist soil and spray it with water once a day to encourage the spores of the centipede grass to germinate into sporophytes. Usually after 2-3 weeks, the spores will grow 3-4 true leaves.

When the centipede grass grows leaves, it needs to be transplanted into a mixture of peat soil, leaf mold and river sand, and then the plant should be watered and given a well-rotted organic liquid fertilizer to increase the moisture and fertilizer content of the soil and promote the growth of the centipede grass.

3. Tissue culture propagation of centipede grass

Centipede grass can also be propagated by tissue culture. The terminal runners are often used as explants. Cut 0.7 cm of the runner tips from the newly grown runners of the mother plant, soak them in alcohol for 30 seconds, then transfer them to mercuric chloride for 6 minutes, rinse them 3 times and then inoculate them.
