White sweet potato planting time and method

White sweet potato planting time

White sweet potatoes prefer warm and humid environments, and their growing period is very long. They need 7-8 months to mature after planting. According to their habits, early-maturing white sweet potatoes can usually be planted in March, and late-maturing varieties of white sweet potatoes can be planted later, usually in April-June.

How to plant white sweet potatoes

1. Land preparation and fertilization

White sweet potatoes are suitable for planting in deep, loose, fertile and well-drained soil. They should not be planted in heavy clay soil, otherwise their tubers will easily develop poorly. After selecting a plot of land, the soil needs to be deeply plowed and well-rotted farmyard manure needs to be applied to the soil to improve soil fertility.

2. Seed treatment

The seeds of white sweet potatoes are relatively hard and need to be properly germinated. Choose mature, plump and fresh seeds, soak them in clean water for 10-12 hours, and then place them in a warm environment of 25-28℃ for germination. Rinse them once a day and wait until the seeds germinate before sowing.

3. Planting and maintenance

Sow the processed white sweet potato seeds into the soil with a row spacing of 50 cm and a plant spacing of 33 cm. Sow 2-3 seeds in each hole, then cover with a 2-3 cm thin layer of soil. Keep the soil slightly moist after sowing, and the seedlings will emerge in about half a month.

White sweet potato planting precautions

White sweet potatoes will sprout half a month after sowing. After it grows 2-3 true leaves, it is necessary to thin out and replant, leaving 1-2 seedlings in each hole. It is best to transplant the seedlings with soil balls on a cloudy day, and carry out inter-row cultivation and weeding when the seedlings are 7 cm tall. The inter-row cultivation should be shallow to avoid damaging the roots.
