When to plant shallots

Scallions are mainly sown in spring and autumn. The planting time in spring is mostly from February to March, and in the Yangtze River Basin it can be carried out from March to April. The planting time in autumn is from September to October. It should be noted that during autumn sowing, you must pay attention to keeping warm. If planted in a greenhouse, it can be done all year round.

Onion harvest time

If green onions are sown in spring, they can be harvested and put on the market in June or July. If they are sown in autumn, they can be harvested and put on the market in April or May of the following year. However, now that planting technology is advanced, green onions can be seen on the market all year round. Fresh green onions are available at any time, making it a common vegetable.

Green onion planting methods and key points

1. Select soil and apply fertilizer

Scallions are suitable for planting in loose, well-drained soil. If you want to ensure the fertility of the soil, you can deep plow and apply enough base fertilizer before planting. Generally, you can apply fully decomposed organic fertilizer. After fertilization, the fertilizer should be turned into the soil to prevent volatilization and loss. Then level the soil and make ridges with a width of 1.5 meters.

2. Seeding and planting

There are two ways to plant shallots: row sowing and broadcast sowing. For row sowing, keep a spacing of 10 cm. After sowing the seeds, cover them with 1.5 cm thick soil. Transplanting and planting are required 40 to 50 days after sowing. 8 to 10 plants should be planted in each hole. Keep a distance of 8 to 10 cm between holes. The planting depth is about 4 to 6 cm, and then water should be poured for planting.

3. Field management

The soil needs to be kept moist before and after the green onions emerge, and not too dry. When the seedlings grow 1 to 3 leaves, reduce watering. Also, use less water during the seedling growth period after transplanting. At the same time, cultivate the soil 1-2 times to promote its root growth. After that, water it once every 7-10 days. If the harvest period is long, pay attention to topdressing.
