Can bougainvillea cuttings be transplanted?

Bougainvillea can be grown by cutting and grafting, which is a widely used cultivation method. However, if diseased, weak and overgrown branches are used for cuttings, it will be difficult for them to survive.

If you want the cut branches to survive, you should cut long, thick and healthy branches. Such branches will take root quickly and have a high survival rate. If the cut branches are directly inserted into the soil, it will be difficult to cultivate and it will not be easy for them to survive.

Bougainvillea cutting time

The best time to take cuttings of Bougainvillea is in spring, specifically from March to June. If you cut and propagate in autumn and winter, the survival rate will be relatively low. Therefore, the time of pruning will directly affect whether it can survive.

Methods and key points of cutting of bougainvillea

1. Cutting medium

Bougainvillea has a wide adaptability to cutting media. You can choose a mixture of coarse sand, fine sand, coal balls, coal slag, etc. with good permeability. After preparation, use 0.1% carbendazim solution to disinfect and sterilize to remove bacteria and insect eggs in the substrate. This can provide a suitable growth environment for Bougainvillea cuttings and avoid diseases in the later stage.

2. Cut the cuttings

Cut cuttings from healthy and well-growing bougainvillea. Choose thick, semi-lignified branches of the current year, about 8-10 cm in length. Remove the leaves at the lower part, leaving 2-3 leaves on the top. Cut the bottom of the cuttings into an oblique surface to keep the incision smooth. In order to increase the rooting speed, you can soak it in rooting solution in advance and place it in a cool place nearby to dry.

3. Take cuttings

Prepare the substrate and insert the processed bougainvillea branches into the substrate, about 7-8 cm. After cutting, gently press the soil, water to keep it moist, maintain a suitable temperature, cover with a film to keep warm and moist, and keep it in a diffuse light environment. It will take root in about two weeks.
