Daylily planting time and method

Daylily planting time and method

Daylily growth habits

Daylily has strong adaptability to soil, is resistant to barrenness and drought, and can be cultivated on the edge of the field or on hillsides. It has a wide adaptability to light and is relatively shade-tolerant. The aboveground part of daylily is not cold-resistant, while the underground part can withstand temperatures as low as minus 10°C. It is not resistant to waterlogging. The suitable temperature for leaf growth is 15°C to 20°C, and the suitable temperature during the flowering period is 20°C to 25°C.

Daylily planting time

Daylily is generally planted in spring and autumn. For spring planting, the sowing work is generally completed from mid-April to early May. The temperature at this time is relatively warm, which is suitable for its growth. For autumn planting, the sowing is generally completed from late September to mid-October.

Daylily planting methods and key points

1. Planting method

The planting methods of daylily include sowing and division. Because the sowing time is long, it cannot be planted on a large scale, so the division method is often used. It can be planted in spring and autumn. It can be planted in spring before pulling out the flower stalks of daylily, and it can be planted after picking the flower buds in autumn every year.

2. Division method

Choose seedlings that grow well, bloom abundantly, and are free of pests and diseases. When digging, be careful not to damage the root structure, otherwise it will affect later growth. Cut the roots from the short stems, cut off the old roots of the plant, and leave well-grown, single-bud branched roots on the rhizomes.

3. Land selection and treatment

Daylily is suitable for planting in loose, fertile loam or clay soil with good water and fertilizer retention. The land should be plowed before planting to a depth of more than 20 cm. Depending on the soil fertility, about 800 kg of farm fertilizer, 50 kg of superphosphate and 20 kg of urea should be applied per mu.

4. Field management during seedling stage

During the seedling stage of daylily, water, fertilizer, disease and pest control, etc. need to be done well. After planting, water must be replenished in time to maintain the moistness of the soil. After entering the drought period, it is also necessary to increase the amount of water in the field. Watering 1-2 times a week is more appropriate. The daylily seedling stage requires relatively little fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilizer can be applied with an appropriate amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.

5. Pests and diseases

Daylily will have some diseases and pests during its entire growth period. Farmers should strengthen management and take timely prevention and control measures to avoid reducing the yield and quality of daylily due to diseases and pests.
