Peony cutting propagation methods and precautions

How to propagate peony

There are many ways to propagate peonies. The most commonly used ones are division and grafting. It can also be propagated by sowing, but it is not often used. It can also be propagated by cuttings, and the survival rate is still acceptable.

The most suitable time for peony cuttings is generally in the summer every year, around June and July, because there is more rainfall during this period and the climate is more suitable for it, which is conducive to rooting and survival.

Peony cutting propagation method

1. Prepare the soil

When propagating peonies by cuttings, you need to prepare loose, breathable and well-drained soil, preferably neutral, as this will be more conducive to rooting and will also be easier to manage after propagation.

2. Select the cuttings

The cuttings should be free of pests and diseases and should be branches grown in the current year. Remove the top buds, leaving the middle side buds, and then soak the branches in a rooting agent for 5-8 hours to ensure the survival rate.

3. Insert the seeds into the soil

Insert the treated cuttings into the soil, paying attention to the insertion depth, which should be about one-third of the cuttings and not more than half. After insertion, water them thoroughly and cover them with a film to keep them moist and warm. After this treatment, they will germinate and take root in about a month.

Precautions for peony cutting propagation

When propagating peonies by cuttings, you need to pay attention to the choice of time. It is best to do it when it is warmer. The second thing is the choice of cuttings. Try to choose thicker branches without diseases and insect pests. After inserting, press the surrounding soil and keep it moist in a cool place for maintenance.
