How and when to plant water chestnuts

Water chestnut planting time and month

Water chestnuts are usually sown in March and April. They grow better in a warm environment. Usually the breeding temperature can be kept at around 20℃. They are not cold-resistant. If the temperature is low, they should be covered with straw. After 10-15 days, when the sprouts grow to 3-4 cm, they can be transplanted into the field.

Planting water chestnuts in spring

Plant water chestnuts in spring, from late March to early April. Water chestnuts have high adaptability and grow well in most soils. The stronger the sunlight, the better the water chestnut grows. It likes a warm growing environment, but grows better at 20℃.

Planting water chestnuts in summer

Water chestnuts like a humid environment. If planted in summer, they need to be provided with sufficient water, especially in hot summer weather, the soil must be kept moist. The shepherd's purse seedlings transplanted in late July to early August will turn green in about 5 days.

Water chestnut planting method

Water chestnuts like a moist environment and grow in ponds or cultivated in paddy fields. They are suitable for growing in loam with a solid, loose, fertile and nutrient-rich subsoil. In cultivation, a 20 to 25 cm tillage layer is required to promote the growth and development of bulbs. In addition, in terms of fertilization, less nitrogen fertilizer and more phosphorus fertilizer are required. Sufficient light must be provided throughout the growing period.

1. Reproduction: Water chestnuts are generally propagated by their bulbs. Select bulbs of good quality and weighing more than 15 grams, soak them in carbendazim for sterilization in advance, and then germinate them indoors, and then you can sow them.

2. Germination: Germination is usually done indoors. Spread 10 cm of straw, arrange the water chestnut buds on it facing upwards, spread another layer of straw on top, put the water chestnuts on it, repeat three or four layers, wet it with water every day, keep it moist, and when the buds grow to about 4 cm, they can be planted.

3. Diseases: Stem rot is a major threat to water chestnuts. This disease is more likely to occur in hot and humid weather and spreads quickly. If it is discovered late, the entire water chestnut will be beyond saving. In the early stages, you can spray 500-1000 times of 50% carbendazim.

4. Pests: Common ones are borers, grasshoppers, etc. Pests do not cause much harm to water chestnuts. When they are found, they can be caught and killed in time, or they can be controlled with omethoate.
