How to prune wolfberry bonsai

How to prune the branches and leaves of wolfberry bonsai

After early April, if new shoots emerge from the wolfberry bonsai, they can be removed directly to avoid nutrient loss and promote the growth of the plant itself.

Wolfberry sprouts earlier than other plants. If it is newly planted wolfberry, you must choose suitable branches and leave bud points. It has many tillers and should be cleaned early. After clearing the buds, use a strong knife to cut out from the bottom of the bud to avoid affecting the dispersion and loss of nutrients. Remove excess inward branches and branches under the leaves, and control excess branches.

When making old wolfberry bonsai, it can generally be made into a cliff style or a curved trunk style. The twigs can be tied with wire into a drooping shape, and the roots can be shaped into a bridge style.

Tips for pruning wolfberry bonsai

1. Within 30 to 50 cm above the ground, select three strong side branches to cultivate as the three main branches. When the selected main branches grow to a certain length, cut them off 30 cm from the trunk. The three main branches should be in three different directions.

2. We can trim the branches that are too long in time to maintain the overall flatness of the plant and promote vigorous growth of the branches.

3. The wolfberry is about to enter the fruit-bearing stage, so you can pinch the tops of the fruits appropriately to ensure that the plants bear fruit evenly.

Precautions for pruning wolfberry bonsai

After pruning, the wolfberry bonsai must not be placed directly in the sun, but in a cool place with good ventilation, so that its side branches can grow faster. Do not water it too much after pruning to avoid rotting of the wound. It needs to be fertilized in time to increase nutrition.
