How to prune gardenia

When to prune gardenia

Gardenia can be pruned twice a year, the first time between May and July, and the second time around December. The methods and purposes of pruning are different at different times.

The best cuttings for gardenia are two-year-old branches. Use sandy soil and do it in summer and autumn. Before cutting, trim the branches and soak them in rooting powder. Then insert them into the substrate. Control the humidity and temperature, and they will soon take root and sprout.

Gardenia pruning

Each time you grow gardenia, you should cut off a few pairs of leaves at the end of the branches and remove the dead flowers. From May to July, you can prune the overgrown branches and remove the overly dense branches. This can provide better light conditions for the remaining branches and leaves and help them grow.

After the gardenia flowers wither, cut off the remaining dead flowers on the branches to save nutrients and help the plant quickly get through the weak period after flowering.

Gardenia pruning techniques

The dormancy period of gardenia has passed, especially when it is just sprouting, be sure to cut off the branches that do not need to grow as soon as possible to maintain the growth of the entire plant.

Gardenia can be pruned appropriately when it is dormant, mainly pruning diseased and insect-infested branches, withered and dead branches, and overlapping branches to maintain even growth of the main trunk.

Gardenia pruning and flowering

In order to make the gardenia bloom more beautifully, trim the excess flower buds, and leave 2 to 3 on the more vigorous branches, leaving well-developed flower buds.

Tips for pruning gardenia

Gardenia grows vigorously from May to July. In order to prevent it from growing too high, it is necessary to prune the long branches to increase the number of flowers, which is conducive to subsequent growth.
