How to save seeds from mulberry

How do mulberry seeds come from?

Mulberry, also known as mulberry, is the mature fruit of the mulberry tree. The entire female inflorescence develops, and each ovary contains a small nut with seeds, which are mainly hidden in the thick and juicy calyx.

Mulberry seeds

When mulberries are ripe, they can be harvested in time, the pulp can be washed, and then the seeds can be rubbed out and sown immediately or stored in wet sand. When sowing, they need to be soaked in 50-degree warm water, and then soaked for another 12 hours after natural cooling. After germination, they can be sown. Mulberries can keep their own seeds.

Mulberry seed storage

The storage methods of mulberry seeds include dry storage and low-temperature storage. The dry storage method mainly uses dry materials, mainly quicklime, caramel or dried third-instar silkworm feces, which are placed at the bottom of the storage container and separated by straw paper. Then, mulberry seeds packed in cloth bags are placed on top and stored in a dry and cool place.

The low-temperature storage method mainly uses cold storage equipment to store, controlling it between 0-5 degrees. It is most suitable for storing mulberry seeds, and the storage method is relatively simple.

Mulberry seed planting

Mulberry can be sown in spring, summer and autumn. For summer and autumn sowing, new seeds of the year can be used. Before sowing, they should be germinated by soaking them in warm water for 12 hours, then placing them in wet sand for germination. Keep them moist at all times and sow them when the seed coat breaks and the seeds are exposed.

When sowing, you must control the distance well. Dig furrows with a row spacing of 20 cm and a plant spacing of 30 cm. The furrow depth should be 1 cm. Apply enough base fertilizer and cover with soil. The seedlings will emerge after about 10 days. When they grow to 3-4 cm, you can thin out the seedlings, remove the weak ones and keep the strong ones, and add new seedlings.
