How to propagate walnuts and what to pay attention to

How to propagate walnuts and what to pay attention to

Walnut breeding method

The main ways of walnut propagation are sowing propagation, grafting seedlings, and cutting propagation. Walnut seeds can be propagated, and the natural reproduction method is sowing propagation. In addition, cutting propagation is the fastest.

Walnut breeding time

Walnut trees can be grafted and propagated in April in spring. Grafting too early or too late will affect the success rate of walnut trees. Sowing and cutting propagation can be carried out in spring and autumn.

Walnut propagation method

Walnut cutting propagation

Walnuts propagate by cuttings quickly. Cut off one to three-year-old branches from the upper part of the mother plant, with a length of 15 cm and a thickness of 1.5 cm. Trim the leaves on the lower part, leaving only the top 3-4 leaves. Soak the bottom in rooting powder alcohol solution, then plant the cuttings in a moist seedbed, which can be covered with straw for warmth.

If the light is very strong, you should also put up a shade net to provide an ambient temperature of 18-25 degrees. It is best not to exceed 30 degrees, and of course not lower than 10 degrees. The branches of the walnut will sprout soon, and maintenance will be required later.

Walnut seed propagation

The time for walnut sowing is in spring and autumn, preferably in spring from March to April. The seeds need to be treated for germination. The soil can be prepared to be loose, fertile, and well-drained. It should be disinfected and wetted in advance. Then sow the seeds horizontally, cover them with about 6 cm of soil, water them thoroughly once, and maintain them in a semi-shaded environment.

Walnut breeding precautions

When walnuts are propagated by sowing, it is necessary to ensure that there is no damage inside the seeds. When grafting, better scions or rootstocks should be selected, as long as they can allow the plants to grow better. In the early stage of cuttings, there is no root, so water them in time to maintain the humidity of the environment, but not too much. Water will accumulate at the bottom, which will easily cause rot and fail to take root.
