How to propagate yew and what to pay attention to

Reproduction method of yew

The main way of propagating yew is cuttings. Its seeds can also be propagated, and its natural way of reproduction is seed propagation. Generally speaking, cuttings are the fastest way to propagate.

Yew breeding time

It is generally more appropriate to propagate yew trees in spring from February to April and in autumn from September to November. The climate, temperature, humidity and other aspects in these two time periods are more suitable, and the survival rate of propagation is high.

How to propagate yew

Propagation of Taxus chinensis by cuttings

The best time to propagate yew by cuttings is usually May to June. You need to choose a 1-4 year old plant, cut a 10 cm long woody branch, remove about 2/3 of the leaves at the lower end, and soak the cut end of the branch in a solution made with rooting powder for about 3-12 hours.

Choose sandy soil, perlite, etc. as cutting soil, insert the treated branches directly into the cutting soil, and then cover them with plastic cloth or other materials. Be careful not to expose them to strong light and water them appropriately.

Seed propagation of yew

When propagating yew by sowing, soak the seeds in potassium permanganate solution for 10 minutes for disinfection, then wash them with clean water and dry them. Evenly sow the dried seeds on the sand bed and cover the seeds with sterilized loam.

Precautions for propagation of yew

The soil requirement for yew reproduction is loose, moist, well-drained, fertile acidic sandy soil with high organic matter content. Provide appropriate shading, avoid direct sunlight, and maintain a cool and humid climate environment. The most suitable growth temperature is 20-25℃.
