How to grow asparagus fern indoors and what to pay attention to

Growth habits of asparagus fern

Asparagus fern likes a warm, humid and sunny environment. It is slightly shade-tolerant, but not tolerant to direct sunlight or drought. It is suitable for planting in loose and fertile sandy soil. The soil in the pot should be changed once every spring. When changing the pot, remove the old soil and add fresh fertile soil. Keep it in a semi-shaded place.

Asparagus fern light requirements

Asparagus fern is a sun-loving plant. It should not be too dark when maintained indoors. It is best to place it in a place with scattered light or semi-shaded and semi-sunny place, and avoid direct sunlight.

Asparagus fern growth temperature

The suitable indoor growth temperature for asparagus fern is between 12 and 18 degrees. It is not cold-resistant in winter and the temperature needs to be above 5 degrees. If the ambient temperature is low, measures to keep warm need to be taken.

How to grow asparagus fern indoors

It is best to provide an ambient temperature of 20 degrees during the growth period of asparagus fern, and the temperature in winter should be above 10 degrees. It is suitable for planting in loose soil and is best placed in a room with diffuse light. Watering should be done "when the soil is dry and thoroughly". During the growth period, fertilizer can be applied every 15 days.

Indoor maintenance and watering of asparagus fern

Asparagus fern has fleshy roots and is afraid of waterlogging, so the amount of watering should be controlled. When the soil in the pot is slightly dry, water it in time. Follow the principle of watering when the soil is dry. Water it thoroughly each time, and do not water halfway. In winter, the weather is cold, so the amount of watering should be reduced. If the air is dry, spray water on the leaves in time to increase the air humidity.

Fertilizing Asparagus fern

It is best to use cake fertilizer, sesame paste residue and other liquid fertilizers for asparagus fern. You can also use slow-release fertilizer or inorganic compound fertilizer. Cake fertilizer can be applied once every ten days, and sesame paste residue can be used a little less each time and used more often. Slow-release fertilizer is the most effective and only needs to be used once or twice a year. Inorganic compound fertilizer is relatively common, so don't use too much at one time.

Asparagus fern pruning

During the indoor maintenance of asparagus fern, the overgrown, dense, old and weak branches and leaves can be trimmed. If the plant grows fast, it can be pruned short to promote the sprouting of side branches.

Propagation of Asparagus fern by cuttings

When the ambient temperature of asparagus fern is between 20 and 30 degrees, you can carry out cuttings. Choose strong branches and leaves, cut a half centimeter above the junction of the branch and root with a knife, and then put a layer of fresh moss on the wound. After about 10 days, tumor-like tissue will grow. After trimming it, place it in a cloth bag filled with soil and fill it with soil.

Precautions for indoor maintenance of asparagus fern

Asparagus fern cannot tolerate low temperature environments and needs to be moved indoors for maintenance in winter and provided with a warm environment. If there is heating indoors, you can spray water to keep it moist in time if the air is dry. Try to water as little as possible in winter. If you water it, the water temperature needs to be consistent with the room temperature.
