How to cultivate Oncidium

How to cultivate Oncidium

Oncidium Growing Conditions

Oncidium prefers a humid semi-shady environment. The light cannot be too strong, nor can it be lacking in light. It needs shade in the summer and sufficient sunlight in the winter. The most suitable growth temperature is 18~25℃. The cultivation soil should be a mixture of peat soil, vermiculite, sawdust and sphagnum moss.

How to grow Oncidium

It is best to choose soil with good drainage and air permeability for growing Oncidium. It can be maintained under full sunlight in winter without shading. Shading should be done in other seasons. The amount of watering can be appropriately increased during the growing season, watering once in the morning and evening, and organic fertilizer should be applied every 20 days in spring and autumn.

Oncidium watering

Oncidium can be watered every two or three days in spring, once a day in hot summer, and less watered in winter. This will have a positive effect on its flowering. Especially when the temperature is less than 10 degrees Celsius, watering must be stopped.

Oncidium fertilization

During the growing period of Oncidium, liquid fertilizer should be applied two to three times a month. When the plant blooms, sufficient phosphorus and potassium fertilizers must be applied.

Oncidium pest control

1. Solution to mosaic disease: Reasonable ventilation, avoid high temperature and high humidity environment, control watering, and promptly remove diseased plants and leaves. You can spray Bordeaux mixture, methyl thiophanate solution, chlorothalonil, etc. once every 7 to 10 days, and spray 2 to 3 times.

2. Solution to gray mold disease: ventilate in time, keep the environment dry, avoid the production of bacteria, spray medicine in time when the disease occurs, and do a good job of prevention.

How to grow Oncidium at home

1. Soil: When cultivating Oncidium at home, choose soil with good drainage and air permeability for cultivation. You can choose to mix crushed fern roots, peat soil, crushed charcoal, vermiculite, moss, etc.

2. Light: Oncidium prefers a semi-shaded environment. It can be maintained under full sunlight in winter without shading, which can promote the flowering of the plant. In other seasons, shading should be done to avoid leaf burns.

3. Water: Water the Oncidium when the soil surface is dry. Increase the amount of watering appropriately during the growing season. Water once in the morning and evening to ensure that there is no water accumulation. Reduce watering in winter to facilitate flowering. Stop watering when the temperature is below 10℃.

4. Fertilizer: Apply organic fertilizer every 20 days in spring and autumn to ensure the balance of various elements. You can irrigate the roots or spray the leaves. Do not apply fertilizer when the temperature is too low in winter.

Precautions for Oncidium maintenance

Generally speaking, Oncidium should be repotted after flowering, while seedlings should be repotted before the growing season, such as in early spring or autumn when the weather is cool. When repotting, change to a larger pot or replace part of the soil depending on the growth of the plant.
