Chlorophytum is a very common foliage plant with a well-developed root system. Pay attention to repotting when caring for it. The correct repotting method can help spider plants grow and germinate better. So how do you repot and change the soil for spider plants? Let’s take a look with the editor below. 1. Choose potting soil Choose a new pot that is similar in size or slightly larger than the original pot to ensure that the spider plant has room to grow while avoiding disrupting its growth rhythm. You can buy ready-made floral soil, or make your own. Generally speaking, the ratio of flower soil, leaf mold and sandy soil should be 3:1:1. Such soil has good air permeability and drainage, which is conducive to the growth of spider plants. 2. Time to change pots It is best to repot spider plants in spring or autumn. The climate in these two seasons is mild, which is conducive to spider plants adapting to the new environment and resuming growth. 3. Remove from the basin Gently pinch the stem of the spider plant and use force to remove the plant from its original pot. If the roots are solid, you can use tools such as flowering shears to cut off some of the roots, but be careful not to damage the main part of the plant. 4. Remove old soil After removing the spider plant from its old pot, use your hands to gently loosen the soil and remove the dirt from the roots. You can wash it in water to remove all the dirt. 5. Prune the roots Check the roots of the spider plant and prune any that are too long, damaged, or infested with diseases or insects. After pruning, the roots should be flat, full and free of disease. Pay special attention to cutting off the thick roots at the bottom, which are water roots like radishes . These roots store a lot of water and nutrients, but if you put them directly in a large pot without soil in the middle and only fill them with soil around, root rot is likely to occur. 6. Put it in a new pot Place a layer of drainage stone or gravel in the bottom of the new pot to ensure good drainage. Place the trimmed spider plant in a new pot, taking care to adjust the position of the plant so that the roots are evenly distributed in the soil. 7. Watering After repotting, water the plant appropriately. After straightening the plant, you can gradually tilt the pot over the edge and water the roots of the plant to fully remove the gaps in the soil. If it is moist soil, you can wait three days before watering. If the soil is dry, water it thoroughly once after planting. Rooting liquid can be added when watering to promote rooting of spider plants. 8. Post-management After repotting, the spider plant needs to be placed in a place with diffuse light to avoid direct sunlight that may cause sunburn to the leaves. The more suitable lighting conditions are diffuse light, about 3-4 hours of direct light per day. Determine the appropriate amount of watering and fertilizing according to the growth of the spider plant. After repotting, temporarily avoid using too concentrated fertilizers . You can choose more diluted liquid fertilizers and apply them once a week. In the later stage, the amount of fertilizer can be gradually increased according to the growth needs of spider plants. The above is an introduction on how to repot and change the soil of spider plants. Do not apply fertilizer for a period of time after repotting to allow the plants to adapt to the new soil. You can then apply fertilizer as needed, but avoid over-fertilizing.
