How to propagate Hosta

How to propagate Hosta

1. Seed propagation

Since the seeds of Hosta are very small, they are sown immediately after being harvested, while ensuring room temperature. In order to make the seeds sown more evenly, you can mix them evenly with two-thirds of fine sand or fine dry soil and then sow them on the seedbed. After sowing the seeds, they need to be covered with fine soil.

If the seeds are ripe in September, you can sow them directly in pots indoors and control the outside temperature at around 20 degrees. It only takes one month for the seeds to germinate. In spring, transplant the seedlings to the open field and they will bloom after two or three years of cultivation. You can also harvest the seeds, dry them and store them in a dry and cool place, and then sow them in March or April of the following year.

2. Division propagation

This method is its main method of reproduction. Three or four buds will sprout one year after planting, and the plants can be divided in March or April in spring.

When dividing the plants, dig the old plants out of the pots and dry them in the sun for a day or two to allow the moisture to evaporate fully. At this time, the roots of the plants are softer and very suitable for sharp cutting. They can be divided into one bud per plant or three or four buds per cluster. The incisions need to be smeared with wood ash or sulfur powder to prevent the invasion of pathogens. Then plant them in sandy loam and water them thoroughly. Generally speaking, the plants can be divided once every three to five years.
