The easiest way to grow celery

Celery is a common seasoning vegetable and is grown in a very wide area. Celery prefers a cool climate and the suitable temperature for growth is 15-20℃. Too high or too low temperatures will affect its growth. Below, the editor will introduce the simplest method of growing celery, let’s take a look.

1. Choose a seed

Choose celery seeds that are suited to your climate. Two common celery varieties are Western celery and Chinese celery. Soak the celery seeds in clean water for about 24 hours to wash away the mucus from the seeds. The germination method can be low-temperature germination or hormone germination. Low temperature germination is to germinate seeds at 15-20℃. Hormone germination is to soak the seeds in gibberellin for 12 hours and then take them out and sow them. It can increase the germination rate and shorten the emergence time.

2. Prepare the soil

Celery prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting, make sure the soil is loose, fertile, and filled with sufficient organic fertilizer . Celery should not be planted continuously. It is best to rotate it with other vegetables to avoid the accumulation of pests and diseases and imbalance of soil nutrients.

3. Planting seeds

Celery seeds are small and can be broadcast or drilled. Lightly sprinkle the seeds on the soil surface, and then cover with a thin layer of soil, about 0.5 cm thick. After planting, keep the soil moist, but not too wet. You can water lightly with a sprayer to avoid washing away the seeds.

4. Provide proper shade

During seed germination, if the sun is strong, provide some shade to keep the soil moist and prevent the seedlings from getting sunburned. When the seedlings grow 2-3 true leaves, thin them out and remove weak and overly dense seedlings so that there is enough space for the remaining plants to grow.

5. Water and fertilizer management

Celery needs plenty of water, but doesn't like waterlogging near its roots. During the growing period, keep the soil evenly moist and avoid overwatering. During the growing period of celery, you can apply liquid fertilizer or organic fertilizer regularly to promote healthy growth.

6. Field management

The optimum growth temperature for celery plants is 15-20℃, and the temperature and humidity should be adjusted according to seasonal and weather changes. Celery is a vegetable crop that tolerates weak light, but light has a great impact on its reproductive growth. During overwintering cultivation, attention should be paid to light regulation to avoid premature bolting. After planting, water the seedlings and keep the ground dry and moist. After the heart leaves grow out, control watering to promote root growth. Apply urea or other fertilizers along with the water to ensure that the heart leaves quickly enlarge again. Water lightly 1-2 days before harvest to keep the petioles fresh and tender.

7. Pest and disease control

Check your celery plants regularly to detect and treat pests and diseases promptly. Common diseases of celery include soft rot, sclerotinia, black rot, etc. It is important to focus on prevention, carry out crop rotation and disinfect the seedbed. The main pests and diseases include aphids, etc., which can be controlled with drugs such as dimethoate or malathion.

The above is the simplest way to grow celery. When the celery plants grow to the right size, usually 2-3 months after sowing, you can start harvesting. When harvesting, you can cut off the outer stems and leaves, leaving the center part to continue growing.
