What should I do if the cucumber only blooms but does not bear fruit?

Cucumber is a common vegetable and is grown in most parts of China. When planting cucumbers, some people encounter the situation where the cucumbers only bloom but do not bear fruit. What should they do? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Improper fertilization

If you want cucumbers to grow well, you should apply fertilizer appropriately during the growth period. If only one fertilizer is applied during the growth period of cucumbers, or too much nitrogen fertilizer is used in the early stage of growth, it will cause an excess of nutrients, resulting in the cucumbers only blooming but not bearing fruit.

Solution: Before transplanting cucumbers, apply decomposed farmyard manure as base fertilizer. The base fertilizer should be sufficient to ensure the growth of seedlings. When cucumbers are flowering and bearing fruit, reduce or no nitrogen fertilizer should be applied, and mainly phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer should be applied.

2. Improper watering

Cucumbers like water, but they cannot be watered excessively, especially in the seedling stage. If they are watered too much, the stems will grow fast, the leaves will turn yellow, and the root system will not grow well, which will affect normal flowering and fruiting.

Solution: It is advisable to water cucumbers 4-5 times from transplanting to fruiting, namely water for planting, water for acclimatizing the seedlings, water for growing the seedlings, water before flowering, and water for the first fruiting. If there is rainy or hot weather, increase or decrease the watering frequency appropriately.

3. Uneven pollination

Cucumber is a monoecious crop that requires pollination by mosquitoes, bees or wind. Cucumbers grown indoors or in greenhouses need to be pollinated artificially.

Solution: Cucumbers are monoecious and need to be pollinated by wind or mosquitoes and bees. If these conditions cannot be met indoors, they need to be regulated by spraying hormones. In the greenhouse, use the agent of growing melons or sitting melons.

4. The temperature is not suitable

Improper temperature in greenhouse cucumbers will also affect flower bud differentiation, such as the temperature at night is lower than 12 degrees and higher than 35 degrees during the day.

Solution: The suitable temperature for cucumbers is 25-32 degrees during the day and 12-18 degrees at night. The temperature difference between day and night is 10-15 degrees to promote flower bud differentiation and pollen and anther development. During this period, more ventilation and sunlight are needed, especially in greenhouses or indoor planting.

5. Melon vines grow too long

The reason why cucumber vines in greenhouses grow too long but do not produce fruits is mainly because of high temperature, high moisture and lack of sufficient ventilation.

Solution: Start pulling the cucumber vines when they grow 5-6 leaves. At this time, you need to build a frame for the cucumbers and prune the vines. Remove any extra side branches and the first yellow leaf, as well as the newly formed small melons. Do not leave any melons with less than eight leaves.

6. Overdosage of pesticides

Pest and disease prevention is an essential task in the cucumber planting process, but if the pesticide is sprayed excessively or irregularly, it will cause pesticide damage, leading to physiological disorders of the cucumber and affecting flowering and fruiting.

Solution: When spraying pesticides, strictly follow the dosage, concentration, method and time specified in the instructions. When spraying pesticides, spray evenly to avoid missing or repeated spraying.
