Brussels sprouts planting time and cultivation methods

Brussels sprouts planting time and cultivation methods

Brussels sprouts , also known as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and small cabbage , are distributed in Zhejiang, Yunnan, Sichuan and other places. The following editor will introduce the planting time and cultivation methods of Brussels sprouts. Let’s take a look.

1. Planting time

Spring planting generally takes place between March and April, taking advantage of the warm spring weather that is conducive to the growth of seedlings. Autumn planting usually takes place between August and September, avoiding the high temperature and humidity of summer, which is beneficial to the growth and quality of vegetables .

2. Soil preparation

Brussels sprouts prefer fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting, the soil should be loosened and tilled, and organic and mineral fertilizers should be added.

3. Planting seeds

You can choose to sow directly or transplant after raising seedlings. When sowing directly, spread the seeds evenly on the soil and cover with a thin layer of soil. When raising seedlings and transplanting, first grow the seedlings in seedling trays and then transplant them into the fields.

4. Seedling management

After sowing in early spring, the seedbed should be kept at around 22℃, and then kept at 18℃ after emergence, and then lowered by 2-3℃ before transplanting. In summer, shade and appropriate watering are needed to cool down the plant, and the soil should be kept moist but not too wet. When the seedlings grow two true leaves, they are transplanted. The seedling beds need to be prepared and fertilized. Water thoroughly after transplanting and add water as appropriate later.

5. Planting

Before planting, it is necessary to apply fertilizer, till the land and make ridges. Apply more than 2,500 kg of high-quality decomposed farmyard manure per mu, and then apply 15 kg of diammonium phosphate and 20 kg of superphosphate as base fertilizer. When planting, try to keep the soil compacted to protect the root system and ensure rapid growth of the seedlings. After transplanting, water the plants sufficiently and water the plants every 5-7 days to allow the seedlings to grow slowly. During the period of seedling growth, inter-cultivation and weeding should be carried out appropriately.

6. Water and fertilizer management

Brussels sprouts are not drought-tolerant during the growth period of their stems and leaves, so they need to be watered more frequently to keep the soil moist. When cultivated in the open field, attention should also be paid to drainage after rain to prevent waterlogging and poor growth. Appropriate watering is required during the heading period, especially in protected cultivation. If the air is dry and the temperature is cool during this period, it will be beneficial to the growth and development of the small-leaf balls. Brussels sprouts have a long growing period and need to be fertilized 3-4 times, one after transplanting, during the head expansion period, and during the head harvest period.

7. Field management

When the plant grows to a certain height, an upright frame must be inserted to prevent it from falling over, and the axillary buds and diseased leaves at the base that do not form a head well must be removed to reduce the consumption of water and nutrients and facilitate ventilation and light transmission.

The above is an introduction to the planting time and cultivation methods of Brussels sprouts. Brussels sprouts prefer cool, frost-resistant, and high-temperature resistant climatic conditions. Growers must master the above methods to obtain high yields.
