Taboos of cultivating Fragrant osmanthus in winter

Taboos of cultivating Fragrant osmanthus in winter

Plant habits

First of all, it likes warm climates, but it is also quite cold-resistant and can even withstand temperatures as low as minus twenty degrees Celsius. However, although it will not cause frostbite, it will still have a certain impact on the plants, so it is better to keep the temperature within a range suitable for its growth in winter. In addition, its roots are fleshy, so it is very intolerant of waterlogging and must not be overwatered. Also, its demand for light is quite flexible, semi-shade is fine, but in winter it is better to have more light. Finally, it has some need for fertilizer during the winter.

Specific taboos

Too much water: This is the most important taboo. If you water too much, it will cause direct damage to the plants, so you must pay attention. Even if you see that the soil in the pot is too dry and needs some water, you must be careful not to allow water to accumulate and must drain out in time.

The temperature is too low: Although theoretically it can be grown outdoors in places further north, if the temperature is too low it will have a certain impact on its flowering time, which means that its flowering period may be delayed until April. Well, in order to ensure the growth, development and flowering of plants, the temperature cannot be too low.

Lack of light: If it is too shady, it will also have a certain impact on the plants, and the fragrance of its flowers will be lighter. Therefore, in winter, you generally don’t need to worry too much about the strong sunlight burning the plants. Just let them bask in the sun as much as possible.

Neglecting fertilization: Because the plant blooms in winter, it has certain requirements for fertilizer. We need to use some wood ash in the autumn and winter. In addition, after it blooms, some nutrients rich in N should be applied.
