How can we get high yield from growing potatoes?

Potato , as one of the important food crops widely grown in the world, its high-yield cultivation technology has always been the focus of agricultural producers. Of course, in order to obtain high yields of potatoes, we must not only consider the choice of varieties, but the key is to strengthen planting management. So how can we get high yields from growing potatoes? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Variety selection

Priority is given to varieties that are disease-resistant, adaptable to the local climate, and have high yield potential. Such as Lishu No. 6, Qingshu No. 9, Linshu No. 18 and so on.

2. Plot selection

Choose deep, fertile, well-drained land for planting, and avoid low-lying land, saline-alkali land , heavy metal-contaminated land and other areas that are not suitable for planting.

3. Seed potato processing

Choose potatoes without external injuries, diseases and cracks as potato seeds. The seed potatoes need to be dried for 1-2 days before sowing, and then cut into pieces for germination. When cutting, a spiral cutting method should be used to ensure that each piece has 1-2 healthy buds weighing about 25 grams to take advantage of the apical advantage. Soak the cut potato pieces in 1000 times the concentration of carbendazim for 15 minutes, then take them out and dry them. After they are dry and free of moisture, they can be germinated.

4. Planting time

The best time to plant potatoes is usually in spring and fall. Spring sowing is generally between March and May each year, and autumn sowing is between August and October each year.

5. Planting method

Place the seed potatoes with the sprouts facing upwards in the ditch. The spacing between plants should be about 20-30 cm depending on the variety. After placing them, cover them with 4-6 cm of soil. Don't cover them too thickly. After all the seedlings have emerged, you can then add soil in batches, which will help the seedlings to emerge quickly.

6. Field management

(1) Carry out inter-row cultivation and weeding in a timely manner during the growing period to keep the soil loose and breathable.

(2) Apply fertilizer and water appropriately, especially increase the amount of potassium fertilizer applied during the tuber swelling period.

(3) Make timely adjustments to the plants, such as topping and pruning, to control plant growth and promote the concentrated supply of nutrients to underground tubers.

(4) Common potato pests and diseases include late blight, cancer, soft rot, as well as cutworms, ladybugs, aphids, etc. Pay attention to taking appropriate prevention and control measures.

In general, high-yield potato cultivation is a systematic project that requires meticulous management and precise operation. From variety selection to field management, every link cannot be ignored, so as to effectively increase the potato planting yield.
