Sweet potato planting time

Sweet potato planting time

Sweet potato, also known as sweet potato , sweet potato, and sweet potato, is a very adaptable crop and is cultivated in all parts of China. Sweet potato is a thermophilic crop, and its suitable growth temperature is 20-30℃. Below, I will introduce the cultivation time of sweet potato. Let’s take a look.

1. Sweet potato cultivation time

1. Northern Region

In northern regions, the temperature rises slowly in spring and it takes a certain amount of time for the soil to thaw and warm up, so the cultivation time of sweet potatoes is relatively late. Generally speaking, the sweet potato cultivation time in northern regions is between mid-April and early June. During this period, the temperature gradually stabilizes and reaches the temperature range required for sweet potato growth.

2. Southern China

The climate in the south is warm and spring comes early, so the planting time of sweet potatoes is also relatively early. In the south, the cultivation time of sweet potatoes is usually between March and July. During this period, the temperature and light conditions in the southern region are very conducive to the growth of sweet potatoes.

2. Sweet potato cultivation method

1. Seed selection

Select seed potatoes with smooth skin, no pests and diseases, and moderate size as seed sources. The weight of seed potatoes is generally between 150 and 200 grams. Such seed potatoes have a high germination rate and strong growth potential.

2. Seedling cultivation

Choose a plot with loose, well-ventilated, fertile and well-drained soil as the seedbed. The soil in the seedbed should be deeply plowed, disinfected and fertilized. Arrange the seed potatoes neatly on the seedbed, cover with a thin layer of soil and keep the soil moist. The temperature is controlled between 16 and 35°C to promote germination of seed potatoes.

3. Site selection and land preparation

Sweet potatoes are adaptable to a wide range of soils, but it is best to choose sandy loam or loam with deep soil, looseness, air permeability and good drainage. Deep plowing is carried out before planting, the depth is generally about 30 cm, the ridge height is generally between 20 and 30 cm, and the ridge width depends on the size of the plot and the planting density.

4. Planting

Determine the planting time according to local climatic conditions and market demand. Generally, planting is carried out when the temperature is stable at above 15℃ in spring. Select sweet potato seedlings about 20 cm in length, dig a shallow trench, place the seedlings flat in the trench, and cover with soil and compact it. This method has a high survival rate and uniform tuber formation.

5. Field management

Water and fertilize in time according to the growth needs of sweet potatoes. In the early stages of growth, nitrogen fertilizer is used mainly to promote the growth of stems and leaves; in the middle and late stages, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are used mainly to promote the enlargement of tubers. At the same time, attention should be paid to drainage and flood prevention. Carry out inter-row cultivation and weeding during the growing period to keep the soil loose and breathable, reduce nutrient consumption and the occurrence of diseases and insect pests. Pinch and top the vines in time to control vine growth and promote the transfer of nutrients to the tubers.

The above is an introduction to the cultivation time of sweet potatoes. The harvest period of sweet potatoes is generally in autumn, when the temperature begins to drop and the leaves begin to turn yellow, usually from October to November.
