Cut the discarded Phalaenopsis orchid, and the flowers will pop out, and neighbors will scramble to get them!

Prune the flower blades after the flowers fade to promote flowering

If you want the Phalaenopsis flower to continue blooming after it has faded, you have two options: 1. Bloom a second time in the same year; 2. Bloom again the following year. The two options correspond to different pruning methods~

1. Blooms twice in the same year

Find a pair of scissors, wipe them with alcohol first, keep 4 nodes at the base of the flower sword, cut off all the parts above, and continue to grow them in a warm place with sunshine.

The Phalaenopsis orchid pruned in this way will bloom again after 2-3 months, but it should be noted that this will consume too much nutrients for the plant, which is not conducive to its growth next year.

2. Bloom again in the second year

Cut off the flower stems of Phalaenopsis from the bottom and add some potassium dihydrogen phosphate appropriately.

After being pruned in this way, the Phalaenopsis orchid enters the cultivation stage and needs to be carefully cared for to wait for more flowers to bloom in the second year.

Post-cut maintenance

After the flowers fade, cutting the flower swords is the most important step, but it does not end there. If you want Phalaenopsis to grow better, you need to take the following steps.

1. Remove the plant from the pot

Gently remove the plant from the pot and remove the soil on the roots without damaging its tender fleshy roots.

2. Prune roots and yellow leaves

Cut off old roots, rotten roots and yellow leaves.

3. Disinfection and drying

Soak in hydrogen peroxide or carbendazim solution for half an hour and place in a ventilated place to dry slightly.

4. Wrap the roots with moss and pot them

Wrap the roots with soaked new moss and put them in the pot. Be careful to separate the roots evenly and not let several roots get crowded together.

Phalaenopsis Daily Care

After pruning the Phalaenopsis orchid after the flowers have faded, you need to carry out daily maintenance to ensure that the Phalaenopsis orchid will bloom again.

1. Watering

When to water the Phalaenopsis depends on the specific situation, mainly based on the dryness and wetness of the potting soil. The toothpick method can be used to judge.

Push a toothpick into the soil and remove it after ten minutes. If the toothpick is just slightly damp, it needs watering. If it is too wet, then it is not needed.

2. Fertilization

During the seedling growth stage, balanced fertilizer (a balanced combination of elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) is mainly used. When inducing flowering, high-phosphorus fertilizer is mainly used, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate (the light should be appropriately increased when inducing flowering). Stop fertilizing when the flower bud is close to the size of a peanut kernel.

For plants grown with sphagnum moss, water twice and fertilize once. For plants grown with bark, water once and fertilize once, and occasionally use high-phosphorus fertilizer once every 1-2 months.

3. Lighting

Phalaenopsis prefers diffuse light and avoids direct sunlight. In winter, direct sunlight can deepen the color of the flowers.

4. Ventilate frequently

Phalaenopsis likes a warm environment, but should not be kept in a stuffy environment. It should be kept well ventilated all year round and can be placed near a window.

Common Symptoms

Flower lovers who have no experience in growing Phalaenopsis orchids want to throw them away when they see their stems and leaves rotting and looking half-dead. It’s such a pity! Huahua teaches you how to solve common diseases of Phalaenopsis.

1. Stem rot

There are black spots on the stem, which slowly corrode the entire stem. The main reason is that there is too much water, the pot is not breathable, the water cannot dissipate, and the stems are damaged.

Treatment method: Repot, trim and disinfect rotten roots, and dig out black spots. Apply alcohol or iodine on the wound, and put the orchid back in the pot after the wound heals. Before it heals, keep it dry and spray it with water every day.

2. Yellow leaves

The top of the new shoots of Phalaenopsis orchid shrinks, the young leaves turn light yellow, and the old leaves gradually turn dark yellow. The reason is that long-term waterlogging causes the soil to lack oxygen and some roots to rot.

Treatment method: Watering should be controlled and fertilization should be stopped, and water should be applied according to the actual dryness and wetness of the sphagnum moss. It can be placed in a ventilated place to speed up the evaporation of moisture in the pot soil.

3. Root rot

Improper watering that leads to waterlogging in the potting soil or poor permeability of the potting soil itself can cause Phalaenopsis root rot.

Treatment method:

(1) Cut off the rotten parts

Remove the plant from the pot, rinse the roots with clean water, cut off the rotten roots, and keep the intact parts as much as possible.

(2) Disinfection

Soak the cut ends and remaining roots in 2‰ potassium permanganate solution for 10 minutes, let them dry, and then coat the cut ends with wood ash.

(3) Repotting

When re-potting, press the rhizomes firmly, water thoroughly, place in a shaded place, cover with film, and keep at around 20℃. New roots will grow in about 20 days.

The Phalaenopsis orchid can still bloom beautifully after being pruned

The important thing is that you can save money on buying flowers again!
