Cutting propagation of Cyperus rotundus

Cutting propagation of Cyperus rotundus

1. Time

The timing of cuttings is very important. Generally speaking, we need to avoid the flowering period. If the plant we want to perform this operation on will bloom, we need to carefully check when it will bloom. As mentioned earlier, it will bloom at the turn of summer and autumn, so we cannot do it during this period.

Taking into account the temperature and other conditions, the best time for us to operate is in June or July.

2. Soil insertion

There are two ways to propagate it, one of which is soil cuttings. As the name suggests, this operation is carried out in the soil.

The part we need to select is the stem with bracts. Some people may not know this, but generally speaking, it is the top part of the strongest branch before flowering, or more precisely, the top three to five centimeters long branch of this part.

Cut off some of its whorled leaves, as this will reduce water evaporation. Then we need to stick it into the soil. The soil is of particular importance. We need to mix some sand and gravel into it.

After that, you should put it in a cool place and water it thoroughly. It is best to keep it moist. It will take about twenty days or more for it to grow new roots.

3. Water plug

The second method is water insertion, which is to insert it into water for maintenance.

The water used here is also particular. It is best to use cold boiled water, and the bottle used to hold the water needs to be wide-mouthed. We still need to choose stems with bracts, but we need to cut the eight centimeters of branches above its umbrella shape, cut each bract in half, and then put it directly into the water.

We need to raise the temperature to 25 degrees Celsius, which will take 20 days. If you are planting in water in the summer, you need to change the water every two or three days. This will resist bacteria and prevent the roots from being damaged.
