When to plant cabbage?

Cabbage, also known as white cabbage, Chinese cabbage or cauliflower, is a common vegetable rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B6, potassium and dietary fiber. So when should cabbage be planted?

When to plant cabbage?

Cabbage is a highly adaptable vegetable and is suitable for growing in different seasons. It can be planted in the open field in spring, summer and autumn, while it is suitable for planting in a greenhouse in winter.

Spring Planting: Spring is a good time to plant cabbage , especially in northern regions. The time for spring planting is generally chosen around mid-March so that it can be harvested in the summer.

Summer planting: Summer planting of cabbage should be carried out at the end of June. Because the temperature is high in summer, measures need to be taken such as building frames and covering, and keeping the soil moist.

Autumn planting: Autumn is another ideal planting season for cabbage, especially in July and August. Before sowing, the soil needs to be watered sufficiently, and after sowing, a shade net should be covered or seedlings should be grown in a plug tray, with 2-3 seeds sown in each hole.

Winter planting: Winter planting of cabbage should start in mid-December, using a small arch shed. Be careful not to let the seedlings grow too long to avoid bolting. The seeds need to be kept moisturized and germinated at 20-25 degrees.

Cabbage planting conditions

Climate conditions: Cabbage prefers a mild and humid climate, has strong cold resistance, and is also good at adapting to high temperatures. The most suitable growth temperature is 15-20°C, but different varieties have different adaptability to temperature.

Light requirements: Cabbage needs plenty of sunlight to promote growth and heart formation. Insufficient light may result in slow growth and loose leaf heads.

Soil conditions: Cabbage adapts to a variety of soil types, but loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter is most ideal. The best soil pH is between 6.0-7.0.

Water management: Cabbage has a high demand for water, but is not tolerant to waterlogging. During the planting process, the soil should be kept moist and waterlogging should be avoided to avoid root diseases.

Fertilizer requirements: Cabbage likes fertilizer, so sufficient base fertilizer should be applied before planting, mainly organic fertilizer , with an appropriate amount of compound fertilizer . Top dressing should be applied in a timely manner during the growth period, especially during the rosette stage and the heading stage.

In short, the planting schedule of cabbage should be selected according to the local climatic conditions and seasonal characteristics to ensure the best quality and yield.
