How to prune roses when they are lush and leafy

Pruning of roses during the growing season

When growing roses, pruning is required during the growth period, usually by removing buds and picking flower buds.

Bud removal is the process of removing some of the young buds that grow on roses in spring, leaving only a few buds. To remove flower buds means to keep only one main bud among the flower buds grown on the rose and remove all the side buds. Paying attention can reduce nutrient consumption, concentrate nutrients, and achieve better flowering.

The second thing is to remove the withered flowers. After the flowers wither, cut off the withered flowers. So as not to consume nutrients and destroy the shape of the flowers.

Pruning roses during dormancy

Roses also need to be pruned when they are dormant. Pruning is usually done around the Spring Festival, and diseased and insect-infested branches, dead branches, overlapping branches and crossed branches on the rose plants are cut off.

During this period, the roses also need to be pruned. Roses with poor growth need to be strongly pruned, generally cutting off two-thirds of the branches. For roses that are growing well, just do some light pruning and cut off some of the branches and leaves.

The pruning of potted roses is different. If the rose plant is small, it is best not to prune it. For slightly larger rose plants, they should be appropriately shortened according to the height of the plant.

If the roses are overwintering in the open field, please note that they are generally not pruned. This is to prevent the roses from freezing and getting injured in the winter. You can wait until spring to prune them.
