How to grow cabbage?

Cabbage , known as the "king of vegetables ", has a long history of cultivation in China for its rich nutritional value and wide adaptability. However, achieving high yields and maintaining quality requires mastering some key growing techniques. Let’s learn how to grow cabbage.

1. Seed disinfection

Given that cabbage is susceptible to a variety of diseases, such as soft rot and black rot, it is recommended to strictly disinfect the purchased cabbage seeds . The specific operation is to soak the seeds in 1% copper sulfate solution or 10% trisodium phosphate solution for 15 minutes to effectively kill the pathogens attached to the surface and inside of the seeds. Afterwards, be sure to rinse the seeds thoroughly with clean water to ensure that the seeds are clean and free of residue before sowing.

2. Fine thinning

In order to avoid competition for resources caused by overcrowding of seedlings, multiple thinning is required. The first thinning should be done 5-6 days after the seedlings emerge from the soil, and then again every 5 days until the reasonable density is reached. This helps the seedlings fully absorb sunlight, water and nutrients, thereby growing into strong seedlings and laying a solid foundation for high cabbage yields. At the same time, pay attention to avoid the "high-legged seedlings" phenomenon to ensure the healthy development of seedlings.

3. Adequate bottom

As a fertilizer-loving crop, cabbage has high requirements for soil quality. It is recommended to choose soil that retains water and fertilizer and is rich in organic matter for cultivation, and apply sufficient amount of decomposed farmyard manure as base fertilizer. The amount per mu can reach 3,000 kilograms, supplemented with 50 kilograms of triple compound fertilizer (N:P:K=15:15:15). This not only provides comprehensive and lasting nutrition for cabbage growth, but also effectively improves the soil environment and improves the quality of cabbage.

4. Ridge cultivation

In order to reduce the risk of root rot and disease caused by waterlogging, ridge cultivation is recommended. The ridge height is controlled at 10-15 cm, the ridge width is 40 cm, and the ridge ditch width is 20 cm to enhance soil permeability and drainage, while utilizing the temperature difference between day and night to promote the accumulation of photosynthesis products.

5. Balanced topdressing

Reasonable topdressing according to the growth stage of cabbage is the key to ensure its high yield and high quality. One week after transplanting, you can apply decomposed manure or urea as fertilizer for seedling growth. After entering the heading period, the demand for nutrients increases dramatically, and compound fertilizer should be applied in time, about 30 kilograms per mu. Pay attention to keeping a certain distance between the fertilization position and the roots, and avoid applying fertilizer within 20 days before harvest.

6. Vinegar spray

Spraying the leaves with vinegar solution can effectively increase the yield and quality of cabbage. The amino acids, sugars and other nutrients in vinegar can promote photosynthesis and enhance the fatness and tenderness of leaves; at the same time, its acidic environment can inhibit the reproduction of some pathogens and pests and reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests; in addition, it can also enhance the cabbage's resistance to drought, heat and cold. It is recommended to spray 300-400 times diluted vinegar solution once every 10 days after the cabbage seedling period, for 3 consecutive times.

7. Scientific irrigation

Cabbage requires a lot of water during its growth process, but irrigation should be done reasonably according to the growth stage. When sowing and transplanting seedlings, water thoroughly to promote germination and seedling growth; water frequently in small amounts during the seedling stage to promote root growth; gradually increase the amount of water after the rosette stage, keep the soil moist but avoid flooding; during the heading stage, ensure that the soil is dry and moist to meet the cabbage's maximum demand for water.

8. Early prevention and treatment of diseases and insect pests

Take preventive measures to reduce the occurrence of cabbage diseases and pests. Insect pests can be prevented during the seedling stage by spreading wood ash and other methods; before the heading stage, pesticides such as imidacloprid can be sprayed to control pests, and sinoprolin can be sprayed to prevent diseases such as soft rot. At the same time, pay attention to harvesting cabbage in time according to market demand to avoid low temperature damage affecting quality.

In summary, by implementing scientific seed disinfection, fine thinning, sufficient base fertilizer, ridge cultivation, balanced topdressing, vinegar spraying, scientific irrigation and disease and pest prevention measures, the yield and quality of cabbage can be significantly improved and the goal of high-yield and high-efficiency planting can be achieved.
