Roses and jasmine, learn to prune them so they can grow better

Rose pruning

There are three main time points for pruning roses:

1. Pruning before flowering in spring: cut off excessive side buds and flower buds;

2. Pruning after flowering: cut off the remaining flowers and weak branches

3. Prune branches heavily before winter or spring.

Below, Huahua will introduce these four pruning methods in detail.

Correct pruning cuts for roses

Spring Pruning

Spring is the period when axillary buds and flower buds are formed. When the axillary buds begin to grow, do not leave too many buds. Just keep two or three buds on each branch. Cut off any shoots that grow downward or inward.

When the new buds grow to two or three centimeters, choose the best growing bud to keep, and retain two more thick branches. The other buds can be cut off to ensure that the plant has enough nutrients to supply the branches and promote the differentiation of flower buds.

When the flower buds differentiate, the branches will still grow many flower buds, each of which is a flower bud. At this time, you can only keep one flower bud at the top of the branch and remove all the other flower buds, so that the nutrients are concentrated on the flower buds at the top of the branch, which can make the flowers bloom big and bright!

Cut off all the buds except the top.

After proper pruning, your rose will definitely bloom better than others in the spring!

Pruning after flowering

After the rose flowers fade, you can cut them off from the four or five leaves at the bottom of the flower branch, and make sure the buds left grow outwards at the cutting position.

According to the red line, cut off the branches that have bloomed and the branches that are weak and sick.

When the branches grow too closely and are not conducive to photosynthesis, we can also pull the branches:

Tie the rope to the branches at 123 as shown in the picture below, and then carefully pull it down until the branches are on the same level as the position D we marked.

The results are shown below (this way the branches are more developed, which is conducive to the absorption of light and can bloom again quickly).

Heavy pruning

When winter comes, the rose enters a dormant state. At this time, the rose can be heavily pruned. This pruning time can be done in winter.

When pruning, all non-lignified branches on the plant can be cut off. All leaves on the remaining branches should also be removed.

Jasmine pruning

Jasmine pruning is mainly concentrated in two time periods, one is pruning during the growing period, the other is pruning during the dormant period. As long as you do these two points well, your jasmine branches will be full of flowers.

Pruning during dormancy

In the spring of each year, before jasmine begins to sprout, cut off all the diseased and insect-infested branches, weak branches, overgrown branches, and overlapping branches. Don't be lenient. As the temperature rises, new branches will soon sprout out.

For branches grown that year, you only need to keep five to ten centimeters, and cut off all the others.

Pruning during the growing season

1. Pruning during flowering period:

After jasmine has finished blooming, cut off the remaining flowers in time. When cutting the remaining flowers, you can cut them below the branch where the flowers are located, leaving three or five small nodes on the branch. This can promote the germination of side branches and the differentiation of more flower buds.

Prune dead branches

2. Pruning during the growing season:

During the growth process of jasmine, you can cut off the overgrown branches at any time, and the diseased and insect-infested branches should also be cleaned up in time to avoid infection. When the branches are too dense, they must be pruned and thinned out in time.
