How to propagate Bauhinia

How to propagate Bauhinia

Cutting propagation of Bauhinia ovata

Cutting propagation is the main propagation method of Bauhinia bracteatum. If we use the cutting propagation method to propagate Bauhinia, the best time for propagation is generally in the spring of the year, which is between March and April.

We select a branch for cuttings, with three or four nodes retained on the branch, then trim the leaves at the lower end of the branch, leaving only the leaves on the upper half, then insert the branch into the soil, wet the soil thoroughly, and cover the cuttings with plastic film. Next, we just need to keep the temperature of the planting environment between 18°C and 25°C. Under normal circumstances, callus tissue will grow from the cuttings in about ten days, and it will take about fifty days for the cuttings to take root and sprout.

Grafting propagation of Bauhinia edulis

In the grafting propagation of Bauhinia, the selection of rootstock is very important. We usually choose Bauhinia odorata and Bauhinia odorata as the rootstock for grafting Bauhinia, and use bud grafting to carry out the grafting. Specifically, we choose the bud branches of Bauhinia odorata and graft them onto the rootstock to achieve the effect of propagating Bauhinia odorata.

There are two periods of the year that are suitable for grafting Bauhinia, one is between April and May in spring, and the other is between August and September in autumn. Because these two time periods are just before the seedlings sprout, grafting during this period helps to increase the success rate of grafting.
