How to propagate bamboo cypress by cuttings

Cutting selection

The young branches of bamboo cypress are cut in late spring and early autumn, with branches grown in the current year used as cuttings. The old branches are cut in early spring using strong branches grown in the previous year.

Cutting pruning and processing

After cutting the branches, choose the strong growing parts and cut them into sections about 5-15 cm in length. Each section needs to have more than 3 leaf nodes. When cutting cuttings, make a flat cut about 1 cm above the top leaf node, and make an oblique cut about 0.5 cm below the bottom leaf node. Both the upper and lower cuts should be flat, leaving only one leaf. Hardbranch cuttings are carried out after the temperature rises in early spring, and it is suitable to choose cuttings from strong branches grown in the first year. Each cutting usually needs to retain 3 or 4 nodes, and the cutting method is basically the same as that for softwood cuttings.

Soak the cut cuttings in potassium permanganate solution for about 3 minutes, and then soak their bases in LBA solution for about 4-5 hours.

Cutting method

Before cuttings, use a bamboo stick to make small holes about 3-5 cm deep on the substrate, and then insert the treated cuttings into the small holes. Note that the direction of the cuttings' leaves must remain consistent, and avoid covering the leaves of adjacent cuttings when inserting. Finally, press the base with your hands, and water in time after insertion so that the cuttings and the substrate can be in close contact.

Post-insertion management

After planting, shading needs to be done, and the shading should reach about 50%-80%. After the roots of the bamboo cypress grow out, gradually remove the shade net. In sunny weather, remove the shade net at 4 pm every day and cover it before 9 am the next day. When the seedlings are about 25-30 cm tall, they can be planted in the field.
