Hawthorn tree planting and management methods

Hawthorn tree planting and management methods

The hawthorn tree is a highly adaptable plant with certain preferences for environmental conditions. Hawthorn prefers acidic soil and grows well in soil with a lower pH. As a light-loving plant, sufficient sunlight is essential for its growth and fruiting. Let’s learn about the planting and management methods of hawthorn trees.

1. Propagation and planting

Grafting method: Grafting is often used to propagate hawthorn seedlings in large quantities, and the rootstock can be wild hawthorn or cultivated varieties.

Sowing and seedling raising: Due to the phenomenon of seed kernel degeneration, it is necessary to increase the sowing amount and collect the seeds before the kernel shell hardens.

Seed treatment: Normally harvested seeds are shelled and treated with gibberellin and then stored in sand to increase the germination rate.

Root cutting seedlings: Use natural root suckers or cut hawthorn roots for root cutting seedlings.

Planting: New roots appear early in spring, so autumn planting is appropriate in Huaibei area. The spacing between rows and plants should be adjusted according to the fertility of the soil.

2. Plastic Sculpting

Sparse layered shape: refer to apple shaping, and pay attention to controlling the weak trunk characteristics of hawthorn trees.

Multiple main branches with natural round heads: Keep the main branches at appropriate intervals according to their natural growth.

Management during the peak fruit-bearing period: Pinch back and rejuvenate the fruiting mother branches in turn to prevent the fruiting part from moving outward.

3. Soil, fertilizer and water management

Fertilization: Apply base fertilizer early in autumn, and topdressing according to the periods of germination, flowering, and fruit expansion.

Top dressing during flowering period: Top dressing and foliar boron spraying during flowering period in spring will increase the fruit setting rate.

Irrigation: When drought causes fruit drop, irrigate or loosen the soil and cover with grass.

Flower and fruit drop: Take corresponding measures according to different causes, such as spraying gibberellin solution to increase the fruit setting rate.

IV. Main pests and diseases and their prevention and control

Diseases: Blossom rot and powdery mildew, which can be controlled by cleaning the garden and spraying pesticides such as lime sulfur.

Pests: beetles , caterpillars, borers and spider mites. Refer to the control methods for apples and pears.

The above are the key points of planting and management of hawthorn trees. Through these cultivation and management measures, the yield and quality of hawthorn can be effectively improved, while reducing the impact of diseases and pests, and achieving healthy growth and high-quality yields of hawthorn trees.
