How to fertilize potted strawberries

How to fertilize potted strawberries

What fertilizer is needed

Usually nitrogen fertilizer can promote the formation of a large number of leaves and runners in strawberries and increase the size of the fruit. If there is a lack of nitrogen, the leaves will turn yellow and partially burn, and the leaves will be slightly smaller than normal leaves; phosphorus fertilizer can promote flower bud differentiation and also increase the fruit setting rate. When strawberries are deficient in phosphorus, the upper leaves will show purple-red spots and the flowers and fruits will be small; the role of potassium fertilizer is mainly to promote fruit ripening, increase sugar content, and improve quality. When potassium is deficient, the edges of strawberry leaves will appear black, brown, and dry. In severe cases, they will become burned, the fruit color will be light, and the taste will deteriorate. In addition, strawberries are very sensitive to chlorine, so the use of chlorine-containing fertilizers should be controlled.

Potted plant fertilization

Apply sufficient base fertilizer before planting, and fertilize reasonably during the growth period to ensure its healthy growth. It will also bloom more, have larger fruits, and set more fruits. You can choose long-acting slow-release fertilizer or other organic fertilizer as the base fertilizer.

Top dressing should be the most popular choice for flower lovers, because many people forget about basal fertilizer. In order to meet the strawberry's needs for various nutrients during the flowering and fruiting period, general fertilizers can be applied from the beginning of its growth until the flowering period. If basal fertilizer is used, no fertilizer is required. High-nitrogen and potassium fertilizers can be applied during the berry swelling period. After a large number of fruits are produced, there is a lack of nutrients. In order to promote the resumption of plant growth and the formation of new leaves and new roots, top dressing is needed according to the specific situation.

It is important to remember that you should not fertilize strawberries too much because their roots are sensitive to fertilizer.
