How to water Christmas cactus?

In the care of Christmas cactus, root rot and shriveled leaves are common problems, which are usually related to improper watering. Christmas cactus is an epiphytic cactus with a relatively weak root system, so special attention must be paid when watering. Let’s learn how to water Christmas cactus.

1. Correct watering method

Avoid using untreated vegetable or rice water, as it may contain insect eggs or ferment in the soil and burn the roots. You should use tap water that has been left for a few days or directly use well water. During the growing season (spring, autumn and winter), the soil should be kept slightly moist, and the principle of "water thoroughly when dry" should be followed to avoid root damage caused by excessive water.

2. Watering in summer

During the high temperatures in summer, Christmas cactus enters a dormant state and requires less water. It should be watered at night under well-ventilated conditions and put back indoors before the sun comes out in the morning to reduce water evaporation and prevent root rot.

3. Fertilization

Use slow-release fertilizer and sprinkle it on the surface of the potting soil once every three months to allow the nutrients to slowly penetrate with watering. Use a fertilizer high in nitrogen during the growing season to promote leaf growth. Use fertilizers high in phosphorus during the flowering season to promote flower bud differentiation and flower opening. Fermented rice water or fish scale and bone water are also good sources of fertilizer, but it must be thoroughly fermented.

4. Lighting

Except for the need for shade in summer, sufficient light should be ensured in other seasons.

By watering it properly, fertilizing it at the right time and ensuring the amount of light, Christmas cactus can grow healthily under suitable soil conditions and bloom on time. By following these maintenance principles, Christmas cactus can not only avoid root rot and leaf shriveling problems, but also grow leaves quickly during the growing season and bloom profusely during the flowering season.
