How to prune climbing roses

Pruning methods

Before pulling the climbing roses, pruning should be done first. Pruning is mainly done during the dormant period in winter, and then pulling can be done.

When pruning, focus on pruning the flowering branches, retaining the buds, and cutting off the tops of the newly grown branches. Old branches also need to be pruned, generally removing old branches that have no new branches.

If the climbing rose has been cultivated for more than 3 years, the old branches that cannot bloom should be cut off so that the plant can grow new branches and will not appear too dense.

Traction method

The plants of climbing roses actually grow upright. If they are not pulled, they will not form a certain curvature, so they generally need to be pulled horizontally, the branches pulled into a horizontal line, and then tied.

First of all, you need to prepare the support when pulling. The support is mainly brackets of various shapes. Only with support can the climbing rose show various shapes. However, for something like a fence, you can use it directly. If you want to pull it to the wall of a building, you need support, such as nails or wire.

The second thing is to plan the direction of the branches. When pruning, you can determine how many branches there are, the direction of their growth, etc. When pulling, you should pull them in such a way that the long branches are on top and the short branches are on the bottom. When pulling, you also need to observe the pulled climbing roses and make adjustments at any time. Sometimes you may need to adjust it one or twice.

After being pulled, the climbing rose will basically grow in this direction, and after that, you only need to do some pruning.
