How to sow and propagate air plants

Air plants pollination

The flowers of air plants are quite beautiful, but they are actually not very common. If you find that your air plant has bloomed, this is a good opportunity. You can pollinate it and then encourage the air plant to produce seeds. Once it is fruitful, you can sow it.

Pollination can generally be done by self-pollination, where the pollen from the male stamens of the same plant is attached to the female stamens, or by cross-pollination. However, during pollination, seeds cannot always be produced successfully. Generally, the success rate of cross-pollination is higher.

When pollinating, be careful not to get water on the stamens. After pollination, it usually takes a long time for the seeds to bear fruit.

Air plants sowing

After getting the seeds of air plants, you can start sowing, but this process will be very long, and may take 3 to 5 years, or even longer.

Sowing can be carried out between March and November every year. The seeds can be placed in a humid environment, the temperature maintained above 20℃, and given good scattered light for keeping in a humid environment. Generally after 5 days, you can see the seeds turn green, which means the seeds are beginning to germinate.

Management of Air Plant Seedlings

After the seeds of the air plant germinate, all you need to do is maintain appropriate humidity and place it in an environment with scattered light to grow naturally. It should be noted that in summer and winter, when the temperature is too high or too low, measures should be taken to prevent the seedlings from dying.
