How to propagate the maidenhair fern

How to propagate the maidenhair fern

Division propagation

Division propagation is the most commonly used propagation method for the maidenhair fern. Division can generally be carried out indoors in all seasons, but it is most suitable in early spring in combination with repotting.

First, prepare a few small flower pots and fill them with soil.

Remove the mother plant from the pot, cut off the aging rhizomes, and use a knife to divide the plant into several clumps, each of which should have rhizomes and leaves.

Then plant the plants in small pots, cover the roots with soil, water them and place them in a cool place for maintenance.

Spore propagation

Spore propagation refers to sprinkling leaves with spores into wet soil without covering them with soil, and using the evaporation of water to promote leaf growth. The specific method is as follows:

Before planting, the peat and fine sand should be disinfected, exposed to the sun or watered with disinfectant.

Then place the soil in a shallow pot and water it thoroughly.

Cut off the leaves that have spores.

Sow the leaves with spores in a shallow pot. There is no need to cover them with soil. Cover them with a glass slide and soak water from the bottom of the pot to keep the soil moist.

Place the flowerpot in a semi-shaded environment at 20~25℃. New leaves will grow in about a month, and they can be divided and transplanted after the pot is full.
