How to propagate Oncidium

How to propagate Oncidium

Propagation by division

Oncidium is a compound-stemmed orchid. After the plant matures, it will grow sub-plants. We need to wait for these sub-plants to grow pseudobulbs and then cut off the sub-plants. Generally, we should cut off the pseudobulbs with two buds. This way, they can be planted directly in a pot with sphagnum moss. The air humidity needs to be higher, so that the pseudobulbs with buds can grow new buds and new roots faster.

This method of division propagation is generally carried out after the Oncidium blooms or in spring or autumn.

Tissue culture propagation

When using this propagation method, you need the tender shoots growing from the base of the Oncidium. First, use 70% alcohol to disinfect the surface of the tender shoots. After disinfection, wash them with sterile water, cut the stem tip thinly, and inoculate them on the previously prepared culture medium. Maintain a relatively warm environment. Generally, new shoots and roots will grow after more than 20 days. It will take about a hundred days to grow two or three leaves, which is a complete seedling.

However, this cultivation method has relatively high technical requirements and is not often used in our daily flower growing.

Aquatic culture

This cultivation method is also very technically demanding. The aquatic cultivation of Oncidium requires more than half a year of cultivation in a professional hydroponic flower base, allowing the Oncidium to grow aquatic roots and fully adapt to the still water environment. Planting Oncidium in water also looks very beautiful. It is very elegant to place it in a home or work environment. In the future, aquatic cultivation of Oncidium will become a new trend.
