How to prune chrysanthemums

How to prune chrysanthemums

General pruning methods

When chrysanthemums are in the seedling stage, many axillary buds will grow, which should be pinched off with your fingers in time. Otherwise, it will consume a lot of nutrients and sprout many small branches, causing the plant to be messy and destroying the beauty of the plant. When the chrysanthemum is in the bud-forming stage, side buds will sometimes grow on the branches of the top buds. Except for those that need to be retained, the rest should be cut off in time with tweezers to promote the hypertrophy of the top buds.

Plastic pruning method

Timely pinching can promote the growth of side branches and reduce plant height. Due to the different artistic shapes of chrysanthemums, the time and frequency of pinching the tops of potted plants are also different. In the northern region, ordinary household chrysanthemum potted plants usually retain 4-7 flowers. After the chrysanthemum seedlings are planted, they are pinched out while retaining 4-5 leaves. When its side branches grow 4-5 leaves, they are pinched out for the second time while retaining 2-3 leaves on each side branch.

How to prune in winter

Cut off the branches of chrysanthemums from the roots after they have bloomed. The branches that have not bloomed will slowly wither on their own. The seedlings growing from the roots do not need to be cut and can survive the winter. After the chrysanthemums bloom, you only need to cut off the old branches after flowering. It is best to leave the root seedlings to overwinter.
