How to breed golden button

How to propagate golden button: division

There will be some small seedlings at the base of the mature golden button plant, which can be propagated by division in spring or autumn. Cut off the seedlings at the base, wait for the incision to dry, and implant them into the cultivation medium. Do not water the newly implanted seedlings. Wait two days and then water them appropriately. Wait until roots have taken root before carrying out normal maintenance.

How to propagate golden button: cuttings

During the growing season, cut the plump and deformed stems of the golden button as cuttings and cut them into small sections of 8-10 cm. They should not be too short, as they will not be easy to root. After drying for 1-2 days, the cuttings can be planted in sand bed or peat soil. It should not be too deep, and the cutting medium should not be too wet, with a water holding capacity of 60-70%. It will take one month for the roots to grow after planting and can then be potted. This method has a faster reproduction speed and is commonly used in production.

It is best to use columnar cacti as rootstocks for golden button cuttings, and the effect is better if you use upright, thick diamond-shaped cacti as rootstocks.

How to propagate golden button: grafting

Grafting is usually carried out in May and June, and upright columnar cacti such as prickly pear cactus and large-flowered snake whip column can be used as rootstocks. Take 10 cm of the modified stem at the top of the golden button as the scion, and it will heal in about 50 days after grafting.

Through grafting, it can grow into a good hanging plant shape. Butt and miter joints can be used. The best time for grafting is from May to September. The method is as follows: choose the branches of leaf cactus that are not completely lignified, cut them off 2-3 cm from the branches, and cut them into a cone shape about 1 cm long. Insert the base of a young, green golden button into the sharpened part of the rootstock without tying it.

After grafting the golden button, pay attention to shading and control watering. The humidity should not be too high, otherwise the grafting will fail. If the scion remains bright green after more than ten days, it is alive. Remove the binding materials and start normal management. Grafted plants grow stronger and faster than cuttings and can produce 4-5 side branches or even more.
