The sowing and propagation method of Michelia sempervivum

The sowing and propagation method of Michelia sempervivum

Soil selection

Michelia sempervivum is a shallow-rooted tree species, so you should choose sandy soil with deep, fertile soil, sufficient water and good drainage.

Applying basal fertilizer to the soil and using liquid medicine to disinfect and kill insects in the soil can effectively reduce the incidence of underground pests.

Seed selection

The seeds of Michelia sabdariffa can be sown at any time and are easy to reproduce. However, if we want to obtain mature and high-quality Michelia odorifera, we still need to sow the seeds carefully.

March in spring is a good time to sow. Before sowing, you can soak the seeds in 0.5% potassium permanganate solution for 2 hours, and then place them in warm water and let them stand for 24 hours. This step is to promote germination.

After the seeds absorb water and swell, take them out and dry them. Then you can mix the seeds with calcium, magnesium and phosphate fertilizer to increase the nutrients of the plants.

During sowing

When sowing, bury the seeds about 1-2 cm in the soil, and then cover the surface of the seeds with a layer of burnt mud, about 1 cm thick. Then cover the seeds completely with loess.

After sowing, cover the soil with wolf grass to keep the soil loose and ensure a certain humidity, which is conducive to the successful germination of seeds.

Post-maintenance management

About one month after sowing, the seeds will basically germinate. At this time, you can take off the "coat" of wolf grass.

The seedlings of Michelia sabdariffa are relatively fragile and easily attacked by various insect pests. Therefore, at this stage, we should pay attention to the prevention and control of diseases and pests. For specific prevention and control methods, you can refer to our previous articles!
